Cynical Cocktails
One night back in my nonchalant, obsessive, disobedient, transvestite, crass, drunken, city and already I'm in love with NYC again.
After dinner, and failure to find a cab, Abe FINALLY admitted his fear of the subway. To be fair i wouldn't know where to begin to take mass transit either. It's not something my parents needed to teach me. After a call to the doorman to send over a car, we headed over to his friend Gary's for a little R&R. But at the corner there were some guys standing around and Abe trying to be cute gestured over to them. Nobody calls over these people unless you're looking for drugs. "What if I am, " was Abe's response. He hasn't heard about the new official government cameras in Washington Sq Park. Now you'll have to find alternate ways to buy. Or just have them delivered to you. Call your local drug dealer for details.
I was in a discussion forum on the net the other day and read the most disturbing comments. Was so perturbed that still I sit here thinking about it. Some accusations were that New Yorkers have all agreed to regard this place as the dead center of the civilized world. Ludicrous, I know. Well, one way to view this is the fact that everything comes to us first- fashion, art, automotives, films. The forum (initiated by someone who has traveled here once) was about life in New York City and how people here are abrasive and harsh, relationships are superficial, drugs and alcohol are what keep the people here going and sex, power and money are what are sought after (so what?) by the so called Manhattan hyper achieving class.
The truth is that maybe living here makes a person a bit cold. And if a relationship or a job doesn't kill you, it does lead to a person developing a barrier - a survival skill learned. On the other hand, New Yorkers although not warm and fuzzy aren't evil either. A couple of weeks ago a few people were chatting about me in an art forum. Was i hurt? Hardly. Laughed it off really. It happens all the time. Does that make me a heartless person? Keeping true to identity, however, I did use my "powers" to have the discussion removed. The comments were mostly false anyway.
Still, the good news is I do have a couple of decades ahead of me before I need to move uptown to become that cynical old lady destiny- in the town without pity- always intended.
