September 2006 Archives

September 26, 2006

Matt and i decided to hit the international scene by meeting up with friends in Montreal. He brought videos he's been shooting for a reality series entitled "Cheaters: How do you hide the evidence when the evidence is you?" I just made that up but the title would most definitely fit. It's astonishing what people will say into a camera.

For the past few years I've been receiving unsolicited portfolios from artists around the world- hundreds of packages. Could just imagine the mail Mary Boone Gallery receives. So if you'd like to submit work for an exhibit we're putting on in the Spring (details will be posted on the site later), go here

The mailing list is inoperative. You can subscribe but for the time being no email will be going out.

Busy weekend ahead. A thousand plans and visiting NY'ers turned West Coasters. Enjoy the weekend!

It was a very long week.

While it's been a week of epiphanies. Some good. Some bad. Nevertheless, one i'd like to never re-live.

On a more cheerful note.. (i'll try)

Today I went over to pick up my mail. (Glad I hired mail service.) In all honesty, i had no idea how many people actually know who i am.  Pretty soon I'll need a herd of public safety personnel. And to think I was about to join Assassins!

A friend of mine who is in advertising called me up for an impromptu dinner this weekend and to share substances that put you in a cloudy haze. It was research that creative persons often do. Delving into the past looking to the future. We watched commercials from the 60's & 70's. Ironically, on a 110" plasma TV with surround sound.

Excuse me while I go make travel plans.

Just got back from a weekend in Vegas.

A few years ago I was having a conversation with a writer friend who said he never uses the same muse more than twice. At that point I stopped using sketches of the characters in my artwork and began using live models instead. I like unusual beauty in the faces I paint. So now I just walk over to the model houses and solicit the girls. Necessity is the mother of all inventions ;)

I have some of these studies that i'll be auctioning off sometime in the next few weeks. Some of them are larger works, so grab them while you can!

It's a very busy morning here. Inside and outside my studio. Hope you're in a calmer place.

Lovaboy Rick took his gf & me to a salsa club last night. Why guys take their gf's to these places is beyond me. Needless to say some guy tried hitting on her and all eyes were on us. Rick threw his "let's take it outside" line. But was easily appeased with an apology and free drinks. Way to lay down the law, Rick.

Moving on... very rapidly..

And very excited. Didn't realize how much work it would take to "simplify" my life. I'm working on a contract to begin selling giclees of my work through a top notch publishing company. When I first started this business I never intended to go into publishing of artwork. Things happened.

Sale of my original artwork is also being transferred to a few local galleries. I am working on new projects that take most of my newly allotted work/non-socializing time and David is on a major one with me so we have temporarily cut back taking appointments for viewing my work in the showroom.

Emails- I receive about 200 emails everyday.. NOT counting the email in general which could run in the 1000's. And besides all the voicemail that we never respond to (sincerest apologies). So from now on the only way to contact us is email- only urgent voicemails will be returned:

Short notice. But I had an epiphany, of sorts, last night and seriously need to scale back on the amount of work I do. And for a New Yorker to say that is very serious stuff.

Will have a link on this site for the new venues when all is finalized.

I love the rain. Have a good day!

Up early today to get a little work done before heading out. I'll be walking a friend down to Ground Zero once the President and all the cameras are gone.

No one is here today so will be responding to voicemails/emails tomorrow.

Summer is over. And romance is dead.

So begins a new art year for me.

Got back to the city late afternoon and headed straight for Bombay Kitchen on MacDougal to get my dose of samosa chaat- a yummy vegetarian platter. If you love spicy Indian food this is the place to get it. The owner herself is usually there putting together the meals (they don't cook on premises=no smell) so it's always made right.

A Painting A Day

Art aficionados everywhere will attest to their addiction to these blogs. If you haven't heard, then read the press.

Last year I spent most of my time on artwork for galleries. When i made the announcement that i would no longer be making artwork for auctions, I didn't know what a ruckus i'd be causing. (I received a few really angry, very scary emails.) Which is a good thing I suppose.

As many professional artists do, each day before i begin working on my originals, i paint experimental or "warm-up" paintings. I am one of those artists that gets the jitters when i approach an important piece i'm working on. I create many of these paintings and just leave them lying around or hang them up for inspiration. This year i am planning on offering them for sale. will try to have one everyday and you can expect the styles to range from my typical realist works to spontaneous abstracts. All depends on my mood that day. New works will be announced in the email list (www.elsophia.com).

New Website

The new website is almost ready. We're still uploading files and fixing a few things.. but the overall look is what you see now. The catalogue will be back once all the artwork is uploaded. I have new blogging software that will allow me to upload my pictures and videos(?) more easily.

Autumn in New York

I began taking my reference photos for a new body of work from the Everyday Life Series which I'll call Autumn in NY. Once i learn how to upload into this blog i'll put them online for you.

Have a lovely Fall day!

Last night I came downstairs where Abe was waiting for me to find him talking to Jessica Simpson. He had no idea who she was (probably still doesn't). Just preys on beautiful women walking by. When I gestured over to him she went into the deli. NY is the nicest place to be. You never know who you'll run into just strolling down the street.

While we're on the topic, people passing by my building are ringing the doorbell and hiding. Maybe it's an attempt to be funny or cute- but it's neither. If I find out who it is I'll be taking my surveillance videos to the local precinct. I see you.

Done in the studio. In an attempt to salvage whatever I can from this holiday weekend, and get some rest, I'm going upstate to watch the rain.
